Standard SSL (Domain Validated) certificates are the easiest and most common type of SSL certificate. OV and EV certificates also authenticate the identity of the company or organization behind the certificate, giving your visitors even more confidence.
With our SSL services, you won't need to take manual steps to configure and deploy new certificates every year — we automatically generate a renewal order as your certificate nears the end of its validity.
Think of OV like getting a driver's license - more hoops to jump through than a library card, but more trusted as a form of identification.
Think of EV like getting a passport - much more stringent processes, longer lead times, and more verification of who you are than with a library card or driver's license. Recognized internationally as the most trusted way to verify your identity.
Fair question, and the honest answer is: for many sites, it isn't needed. Our shared hosting plans include AutoSSL, which issues and renews free certificates on its own, and that's enough for a brochure site or a blog. A paid certificate makes sense in three cases: when you want the certificate to prove your company exists and not just your domain (OV and EV), when you need to cover unlimited subdomains with a single certificate (Wildcard), or when you want the financial warranty that comes with it and a certificate valid for up to three years without automatic renewals in between.
If you have contact forms, a client area or payments, HTTPS isn't optional, and a certificate that validates your organisation adds visible reassurance for anyone hesitating before typing their details. If you have several subdomains, shop.yoursite.pt, blog.yoursite.pt, a Wildcard covers them all at once. If you have a simple site hosted with us, AutoSSL already handles it. You pick the certificate and tell us which domain it will protect. After payment we handle the request with the certification authority and tell you what needs validating. On a DV, validation is simply proving you control the domain, through a DNS record, a file on the server or an email. On an OV or EV, the authority also validates your organisation. Once issued, we install the certificate if the site is hosted with us, or send it to you with instructions if it's elsewhere.
A DV is usually ready the same day, as soon as domain validation is done: the part that takes time is yours, confirming it. An OV or EV depends on the certification authority validating your organisation and can take several working days. Any timeline we give you is an estimate, because validation is the authority's job and not ours; what we do guarantee is that the request goes out the same day and that we keep you posted.
On a DV, just proof that the domain is yours, which takes minutes. On an OV or EV, the certification authority asks for company documentation: legal existence, registration details and a verifiable phone contact, among others. That's the part that usually causes delays, so it's worth having everything to hand before you buy. If the authority refuses to issue because details are wrong or the organisation can't be validated, there's no refund, unless the authority's own policy is more generous.
No. The certificate belongs to your domain, not to our server, and you can use it on a site hosted anywhere. In the cart you can register a new domain, transfer yours, or simply enter a domain you already have elsewhere. If you're hosted with us, we install the certificate for you; if you're with another provider, we hand you the certificate and instructions and they install it.
No. In that case you request a reissue of the same certificate, at no extra cost, following the rules of the authority that issued it. Talk to us and we'll handle it. What can't be reused is a certificate revoked because the private key was compromised or the authority's rules were breached: there's no refund in that case and a new one has to be issued.
The financial warranty attached to a certificate is provided by the certification authority that issues it, on the terms it sets, not by RaiaWeb. We sell it, handle the request, run the validation with you and install it; the warranty and the chain of trust are the authority's. Keeping the private key safe is your responsibility, except where we install and manage the certificate on hosting you bought from us.
Per year: SSL DV €35.00, SSL OV €65.00, SSL DV Wildcard €120.00, SSL EV €150.00 and SSL OV Wildcard €250.00. No VAT is added: we are covered by the VAT exemption under Article 53 of the Portuguese VAT Code, so the price you see is the price you pay. Certificates are sold in one, two or three-year terms, and the price per year drops the longer the term.
It is if you know the site will stay yours and on the same domain. On a DV, one year costs €35.00 and three years cost €70.00, so you pay for two and get three. On an OV, one year is €65.00 and three years €130.00. In exchange, certification authorities require the certificate to be revalidated during the term, to cut the risk of fraud, and we let you know when that comes round.
The certificate renews automatically at the end of the term, so your site doesn't lose its padlock through forgetfulness, and we email you beforehand with the price: 14 days ahead on terms up to a year and 30 days on two and three-year ones. Cancel in your client area up to the day before: you keep the service until the end of the period you have paid for, and that period is not refunded. Renewing requires fresh validation, just like the first issuance.
If you're a consumer, you have 14 calendar days from your order confirmation to cancel without giving a reason: email support@raiaweb.pt and we refund within 14 days, at no cost. Issuing the certificate is full performance of the service, and that right only ends if, at checkout, you expressly asked for immediate issuance and acknowledged that you would lose it. Today our checkout doesn't ask you for those two declarations, so the right stands. The 14-day money-back guarantee on hosting doesn't cover certificates, which are a service in their own right.
